The best of Tradition and Technology
Award Winning Irish Artists
Our mobile Apps feature award winning Irish artists. The artists featured in Irish Music Apps have successfully competed in the most prestigious music festivals and competitions throughout Ireland and Europe. Our tutors all follow the same successful teaching methodology so you can learn to play just as the generations of traditional Irish musicians have done before you.
The videos featured in our mobile Apps are professionally shot and edited. The listening lessons for the tin whistle App are shot in the grounds of beautiful Blarney Castle in County Cork and the tutorial lessons are shot in CIT Cork School of Music’s recording studio.
The first lesson for each tune is a listening one. The listening lessons give you an opportunity to become familiar with the tunes before you learn how to play them. Listen to each tune several times and once you can hum the tune you are ready to begin the tutorial lesson.
In the tutorial lesson your tutor will take you note by note and bar by bar through each tune. If you are using a smart phone, it’s a good idea to print out the music before you start. If you are using a tablet you will have the option to view the tutorial video and sheet music on a split screen. Throughout the tutorial your tutor will refer to sections of the printed music that can be identified by specific colours. If you find a particular bar or phase difficult to learn, use the 10-second rewind feature in the app to go back over the difficult part and practice it until you get it.
Play Along Lesson
Once you have mastered all the notes of a tune you are ready to move on to the Play Along lesson. In this lesson your tutor will accompany you as you practice playing the tune at a moderate pace. Keep practicing until you can play the tune up to speed. Remember a few minutes practice everyday is better than a long practice once or twice a week. Try and practice at the same time everyday and you’ll be playing up to speed in no time.
Traditional Irish music is typically taught by ear and by constant repetition. We provide the printed music as a reference because some people feel more comfortable when they have the sheet music. At Irish Music Apps our goal is to get you playing as quickly as possible so use whatever method works best for you.
When traditional Irish music is played in a session or for dance, tunes are typically played together in a medley or set. When you have learned to play all three tunes the Medley Lesson will teach you how to transition from one tune to the next and also how to add ornamentation or musical flourishes to decorate the tunes.
Irish Music Apps will teach you to play well known Irish tunes. These are the same tunes that generations of musicians learned to play before you. Adults and children from all over Ireland today learn to play these tunes when they attend music classes at their local Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann branches.
